Transverse Colon

The transverse colon is the horizontal segment of the large intestine that extends across the upper abdomen between the ascending and descending colon, helping compact intestinal contents and recover water and electrolytes. Its muscular wall produces coordinated haustral contractions and mass movements that mix material with the resident microbiota, support fermentation of undigested carbohydrates, and propel fecal matter toward the rectum. Understanding its position, mesenteric attachment, blood supply, and physiological functions is important in anatomy and gastrointestinal biology. This knowledge supports interpretation of abdominal imaging, evaluation of inflammatory or neoplastic disease, and planning of endoscopic and surgical procedures.

Transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in the mouse is a commonly used experimental model to study mechanisms underlying cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure development. Here, we describe procedures to constrict the aorta to create a reproducible degree of cardiac hypertrophy in mice.

A Murine Model of Group B Streptococcus Vaginal Colonization

The purpose of this protocol is to imitate human group B Streptococcus (GBS) vaginal colonization in a murine model. This method may be used to investigate host immune responses and bacterial factors contributing to GBS vaginal persistence, as well as to test therapeutic strategies.

Electrophysiological Recording from Colonic Afferent Nerves in an Ex Vivo Rat Colon

2025

This video demonstrates a method to record the activity of colonic afferent nerves in an ex-vivo rat colon, cannulated at both ends and infused with saline to increase intraluminal pressure. As pressure increases, the nerve signal rises, indicating its stimulation.

Minimally Invasive Transverse Aortic Constriction in Mice

Minimally invasive transverse aortic constriction (MTAC) conserves the essentials of regular transverse aortic constriction (TAC) while eliminating the use of a ventilator with tracheal intubation. It proves to be a highly desirable method for high-throughput studies on left ventricular overload, particularly in translational studies.

Surgical Trunk Oriented Laparoscopic Right Hemicolectomy (ST-LRH) for Right-Sided Colon Cancer
