Transversion Mutation

A transversion mutation is a point mutation in which a purine base, adenine or guanine, is replaced by a pyrimidine, cytosine or thymine, or vice versa. It can arise when DNA damage, inaccurate replication, or imperfect repair changes one base pair into another across these chemical classes. In a gene’s coding region, a transversion may produce a synonymous, missense, nonsense, or other sequence change, depending on the affected codon. Studying transversions helps researchers identify mutational processes, interpret genetic variation, investigate disease-associated variants, and reconstruct molecular evolution.

Transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in the mouse is a commonly used experimental model to study mechanisms underlying cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure development. Here, we describe procedures to constrict the aorta to create a reproducible degree of cardiac hypertrophy in mice.

Viral Mutations

2019

A mutation is a change in the sequence of bases of DNA or RNA in a genome. Some mutations occur during replication of the genome due to errors made by the polymerase enzymes that replicate DNA or RNA. Unlike DNA polymerase, RNA polymerase is prone to errors because it is not capable of “proofreading” its work. Viruses with RNA-based genomes, like HIV, therefore accrue mutations faster than viruses with DNA-based genomes. Because mutation and recombination provide the raw material for adaptive...

Minimally Invasive Transverse Aortic Constriction in Mice

Minimally invasive transverse aortic constriction (MTAC) conserves the essentials of regular transverse aortic constriction (TAC) while eliminating the use of a ventilator with tracheal intubation. It proves to be a highly desirable method for high-throughput studies on left ventricular overload, particularly in translational studies.

Speed of a Transverse Wave

The speed of a wave depends on the characteristics of the medium. For example, in the case of a guitar, the strings vibrate to produce the sound. The speed of the waves on the strings and the wavelength determine the frequency of the sound produced. The strings on a guitar have different thicknesses but may be made of similar material. They have different linear densities, and the linear density is defined as the mass per length. One of the key properties of any wave is the wave speed. Light...

Mutations

2020

Mutations are changes in the sequence of DNA. These changes can occur spontaneously during DNA replication or be induced by environmental factors. Mutations can be characterized in several ways: by whether and how they alter the amino acid sequence of the protein, by the scale of the DNA affected, and by whether they affect somatic or germline cells.Consequences of Point Mutations at the Molecular LevelMutations that affect a single nucleotide are called point mutations. When point mutations...
