3d Glandular Structures

3D glandular structures are laboratory-grown, tissue-like assemblies that reproduce the organization and function of epithelial glands in three dimensions, providing a more realistic model than flat cell cultures. They form when glandular cells proliferate and self-organize within a supportive extracellular matrix, establishing cell polarity, tissue architecture, and often a central lumen in response to defined growth factors and signaling conditions. In cancer research, these structures help scientists examine tumor initiation, invasion, glandular abnormalities, and interactions with the surrounding microenvironment. Patient-derived models can also support drug testing and treatment selection by preserving features of individual tumors, strengthening the relevance of experimental findings.

We describe a correlative microscopy method that combines high-speed 3D live-cell fluorescent light microscopy and high-resolution cryo-electron tomography. We demonstrate the capability of the correlative method by imaging dynamic, small HIV-1 particles interacting with host HeLa cells.

Classification of Epithelial Tissues: Glandular Epithelium

2025

The glandular epithelium is made of one or more epithelial cells modified to synthesize and secrete chemical substances. Glandular epithelia can be classified based on cell number. Unicellular glands have individual secretory cells scattered across the epithelial monolayer. In contrast, multicellular glands consist of a hollow tubular duct attached to the cluster of secretory cells located in the deep pockets. Multicellular glands are formed during early development when epithelial budding...

Drug Excretion: Pulmonary and Glandular Routes

2025

Gaseous substances like general anesthetics are absorbed and excreted through the lungs via simple diffusion. This process depends on factors such as pulmonary blood flow, respiration rate, and the substance's solubility. Gaseous anesthetics like nitrous oxide with low blood solubility are excreted rapidly, while compounds like alcohol, with high blood and tissue solubility, are excreted slowly. Drugs can also be excreted in breast milk, which is crucial for breastfeeding infants. The process...

2014

Spatiotemporal information about dynamic proteins inside live cells is crucial for understanding biology. A type of super-resolution microscopy called fast 3D-structured illumination microscopy (f3D-SIM) reveals unique information about the cytokinetic Z ring in bacteria: both its bead-like appearance and the rapid dynamics of FtsZ within the ring.
