Classical Least Squares

Classical Least Squares is a multivariate calibration method that estimates the amounts of known components in a sample from measured signals, making it useful for interpreting complex chemical and biological data. The method models an observed spectrum or response as a linear combination of reference component profiles, then determines the coefficients that minimize the squared difference between measured and predicted values. In cancer research, it can help quantify overlapping molecular signals in spectroscopic or analytical measurements and distinguish contributions from different compounds or tissue constituents. These estimates support biomarker analysis, sample characterization, and more consistent interpretation of cancer-related datasets.

Classical Conditioning

Associative learning, a core principle in behavioral psychology, involves forming connections between events and facilitating learned responses. This concept is vividly illustrated by classical conditioning, a process extensively studied by the Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov. Pavlov's pioneering research on dogs' digestive systems led to the discovery that behaviors can be learned through association, laying the groundwork for classical conditioning. Ivan Pavlov observed that dogs salivated...

Classical Mechanics

Classical mechanics provides a mathematical description of the motion of bodies under the influence of forces. A key principle within this field is the work-energy theorem, which establishes a bridge between the net work done on an object and its kinetic energy. The work-energy theorem states that the net work done on a particle by all the forces acting on it equals the change in its kinetic energy. In simple terms, the work-energy theorem is a method to analyze the effects of forces on an...

Classical vs. Keynesian

Economists have long debated the best way to handle economic downturns. Some believe markets can fix themselves, while others argue that government action is necessary to speed up recovery. Classical economists think economies naturally return to stability as supply and demand adjust. If businesses struggle, lower wages and prices eventually encourage hiring and investment. They believe government intervention, like setting wage limits or increasing public spending, disrupts this process and...

Root Mean Square

If in an experiment, data values have a probability of being both positive and negative, neither the arithmetic mean, the geometric mean, nor the harmonic mean can be used to calculate the central tendency of the data set. In particular, if the positive and negative values are equally likely, the arithmetic mean is close to zero. For example, consider the velocity of gas molecules in a container. The gas molecules are moving in different directions, which might impart positive and negative...

Punnett Squares

A Punnett square displays the possible genotypes offspring can inherit from two parental genotypes. If a trait’s inheritance pattern (e.g., dominant or recessive) is known, Punnett squares can also be used to determine the probability of inheriting a phenotype. Punnett squares are applicable in situations where trait inheritance is determined by a single gene locus and traits are independently inherited. However, they cannot predict trait probabilities for more complex genetic inheritance...
