Flash Chromatography

Flash chromatography is a rapid preparative separation technique used to isolate and purify components of a chemical mixture. The sample passes through a packed column, typically containing silica gel, while a solvent is pushed through under pressure; compounds move at different rates because they interact differently with the stationary phase and dissolve differently in the mobile phase. As separated compounds elute, they can be collected in individual fractions and analyzed to assess purity. In chemistry, flash chromatography supports reaction cleanup, natural-product isolation, and the preparation of purified intermediates for structural characterization, synthesis, and further study.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Jimmy Franco - Merrimack College Column chromatography is one of the most useful techniques for purifying compounds. This technique utilizes a stationary phase, which is packed in a column, and a mobile phase that passes through the column. This technique exploits the differences in polarity between compounds, allowing the molecules to be facilely separated.1 The two most common stationary phases for column chromatography are silica gel (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3), with...

Source: Elise S.D. Buki, Danielle N. Beatty, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT The laser flash method (LFA) is a technique used to measure thermal diffusivity, a material specific property. Thermal diffusivity (α) is the ratio of how much heat is conducted relative to how much heat is stored in a material. It is related to thermal conductivity (), how much heat is transferred through a material due to a temperature...

Photolysis of caged compounds allows the production of rapid and localized increases in the concentration of various physiologically active compounds. Here, we show how to obtain patch-clamp recordings combined with photolysis of caged cAMP or caged Ca for the study of olfactory transduction in dissociated mouse olfactory sensory neurons.

Ion-Exchange Chromatography

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Ion-exchange chromatography is a type of chromatography that separates analytes based on charge. A column is used that is filled with a charged stationary phase on a solid support, called an ion-exchange resin. Strong cation-exchange chromatography preferentially separates out cations by using a negatively-charged resin while strong anion-exchange chromatography preferentially selects out anions by using a positively-charged...
