Metabolic Cell Heterogeneity

Metabolic Cell Heterogeneity describes differences in metabolic pathways, reaction rates, and metabolite levels among cells within the same tissue or population. These differences arise when cells vary in enzyme expression, nutrient uptake, signaling, or exposure to local conditions such as oxygen and nutrient availability, producing distinct patterns of metabolic flux. In chemistry and cell biology, characterizing this heterogeneity helps explain how cells adapt to their environments and why genetically similar cells can respond differently to stress, disease, or treatment. Single-cell metabolomics and related analytical methods can reveal these variations, supporting studies of cancer, development, and drug response.

An Introduction to Cell Metabolism

2023

In cells, critical molecules are either built by joining together individual units like amino acids or nucleotides, or broken down into smaller components. Respectively, the reactions responsible for this are referred to as anabolic and catabolic. These reactions require or produce energy typically in the form of a “high-energy” molecule called ATP. Together, these processes make up “Cell Metabolism,” and are hallmarks of healthy, living cells.JoVE’s introduction to cell metabolism briefly...

Single-Cell Western Blotting to Determine Cell Heterogeneity

2025

The video describes a single-cell western blotting technique that identifies the composition of individual cells captured on a single-cell western blotting chip in a heterogeneous suspension. The technique detects the fluorescence intensity of the fluorophore tagged to a protein marker specific to the target cell.

Study Glial Cell Heterogeneity Influence on Axon Growth Using a New Coculture Method

In this protocol, we described a new method to study the influence of glial cell heterogeneity on axon growth with an in vitro co-culture system. Rat cortical glial cells were cultured to confluence and cocultured with highly purified rat dorsal root ganglia neurons. Different glial cell influence on neurons adhesion and axon growth was compared directly in the same culture. This method provides a new way to directly study the glial cell heterogeneity influence on neuron adhesion and axon...

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.
