Tof-sims

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a surface-analysis technique that identifies the elemental and molecular composition of materials with high spatial sensitivity. A focused primary ion beam strikes the sample, sputtering secondary ions from the outermost layers; the instrument separates these ions according to their flight times, which depend on their mass-to-charge ratios. In chemistry, ToF-SIMS supports chemical imaging, contamination analysis, thin-film characterization, and depth profiling through sequential sputtering. Its ability to map organic and inorganic species helps researchers study interfaces, coatings, polymers, biological materials, and nanoscale chemical distributions.

MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry

2023

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) is a mass spectrometry ion source ideal for the analysis of biomolecules. Instead of ionizing compounds in the gaseous state, samples are embedded in a matrix, which is struck by a laser. The matrix absorbs the majority of the energy; some of this energy is then transferred to the sample, which ionizes as a result. Sample ions can then be identified using a time-of-flight analyzer (TOF). This video covers principles of MALDI-TOF, including...
