Endovenous Laser Therapy

Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) is a minimally invasive treatment that uses laser energy to close diseased veins, most commonly superficial veins affected by chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins. During the procedure, clinicians guide a thin laser fiber into the target vein, typically under ultrasound guidance, and deliver controlled thermal energy that damages the vein wall, causing it to collapse and seal while blood is redirected through healthier veins. EVLT can reduce pain, swelling, and visible varicosities with less tissue disruption than surgical vein removal. Its clinical use also illustrates how image guidance and targeted thermal ablation support efficient, outpatient vascular care.

Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy for Intracranial Tumor Ablation in a Human Patient

2025

Begin with an anesthetized human patient with an exposed skull. The patient is diagnosed with an intracranial tumor.Drill into the exposed skull to create a hole, generating an access point.Using stereotactic guidance, insert a laser diffusing fiber or LDF along the predetermined path and secure it in place.Transfer the patient to an MRI scanner and connect the LDF to a laser source.Capture MRI images from multiple angles to visualize the fiber path and the tumor. This confirms the LDF’s...

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.
