Aging Rat Laryngeal Muscle

Aging rat laryngeal muscle refers to the structural and functional changes that occur in the muscles controlling the rat larynx across the lifespan, providing a model for studying muscle development, maintenance, and senescence. With age, altered muscle fiber organization, contractile properties, and neuromuscular signaling can reduce the coordinated force and timing required for vocalization and airway protection. Researchers use this model to compare young and old tissue, relate cellular remodeling to laryngeal performance, and investigate how developmental pathways, muscle plasticity, and age-related degeneration interact. Findings can inform studies of voice impairment, swallowing dysfunction, and potential strategies for preserving laryngeal function.

(2017)This video demonstrates neurotrophin 4 (NTF4) infusion in an aged rat model to restore laryngeal muscle function affected by aging-related denervation and reduced neuromuscular junctions. NTF4 triggers nerve regeneration and promotes neuromuscular junction formation, highlighting its therapeutic potential for laryngeal...

This protocol describes a robust, reproducible and simple method of isolation and culture of myoblast progenitor cells from the skeletal muscle of adult and aged people. The muscles used here include foot and leg muscles. This approach enables the isolation of an enriched population of primary myoblasts for functional studies.
