Aluminum Electrode Deposition

Aluminum electrode deposition is an electrochemical technique that forms a layer of aluminum on a conductive substrate, often to tailor surface conductivity, corrosion resistance, or dimensional performance. In the process, aluminum-containing ions in a nonaqueous electrolyte move toward the cathode and gain electrons, reducing to metallic aluminum that nucleates and grows on the electrode surface; controlling current density, temperature, electrolyte composition, and deposition time influences film quality. This method supports engineered coatings, electrical contacts, and microscale fabrication, while offering a route to deposit aluminum where conventional aqueous plating is limited by water reduction.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Aluminum is one of the most abundant materials in our lives, as it is omnipresent in everything from soda cans to airplane components. Its widespread use is relatively recent (1900AD), primarily because aluminum does not occur in its free state, but rather in combination with oxygen and other elements, often in the form of Al2O3. Aluminum was originally obtained from bauxite mineral deposits...
