Double Nanohole

A double nanohole is a plasmonic nanostructure formed by two nanoscale apertures connected by a narrow gap in a metal film, enabling optical control and detection at the subwavelength scale. When illuminated, free electrons in the metal collectively oscillate, producing localized surface plasmon resonances and a strongly enhanced electromagnetic field within the gap. This field can capture or sense nanoparticles and individual biomolecules, while changes in optical transmission reveal binding, motion, or molecular properties. In engineering research, double nanoholes support label-free biosensing, single-molecule spectroscopy, optical trapping, and the development of compact nanophotonic devices.

Fixing Double-strand Breaks

2020

The double-stranded structure of DNA has two major advantages. First, it serves as a safe repository of genetic information where one strand serves as the back-up in case the other strand is damaged. Second, the double-helical structure can be wrapped around proteins called histones to form nucleosomes, which can then be tightly wound to form chromosomes. This way, DNA chains up to 2 inches long can be contained within microscopic structures in a cell. A double-stranded break not only damages...

The Electrical Double Layer

2026

In the region where two bulk phases meet, an intricate electric charge distribution arises due to charge transfer, ion adsorption, molecular orientation, and charge distortion. This complex distribution is commonly referred to as the electrical double layer. When a solid electrode interfaces with ions in an electrolyte solution, the speed of electron transfer dictates the rates of oxidation and reduction. The electrode acquires a charge through the escape of atoms into the solution as cations or...

The Double-Entry Accounting System

2025

The Double-Entry Accounting System is a foundational concept in modern accounting, ensuring that every financial transaction affects at least two accounts. This method maintains balance in the accounting equation: Assets = Liabilities + Equity. It allows businesses to keep accurate records, identify errors quickly, and prevent fraud. Each entry has a corresponding and opposite entry in a different account, providing a complete view of how money flows within the organization. The importance of...

Double Integrals Over General Regions

2026

Double integrals are often used to measure quantities distributed across two-dimensional regions, such as rainfall over a lake, heat across a metal plate, or population density over land. In many practical situations, the region of interest does not have straight boundaries and cannot be described conveniently as a rectangle. Instead, the region may have curved or irregular edges. To evaluate integrals over such domains, the region is embedded inside a larger rectangular region where...

Introduction to Double Integrals

2026

Double integrals are fundamental tools in multivariable calculus for computing volumes under surfaces defined by functions of two variables. While single-variable integration calculates the area under a curve, double integrals extend this concept to evaluate the volume between a surface and a planar region. This generalization is particularly valuable in physical and engineering contexts, where many systems and structures are best modeled in three dimensions. In single-variable integration, the...
