Single Polymer Probe

A Single Polymer Probe is a nanoscale experimental approach that uses one polymer chain or polymer-based probe to measure molecular behavior that bulk measurements can conceal. By isolating the probe and applying a controlled force, displacement, or environmental change, researchers can record its extension, deformation, relaxation, or interactions with surrounding materials. These measurements connect molecular-scale structure and dynamics with macroscopic properties such as elasticity, adhesion, friction, and transport. In engineering, single polymer probes support the design and evaluation of coatings, soft materials, nanocomposites, sensors, and biomedical interfaces, while improving understanding of how individual polymer chains govern material performance.

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...
