Trap-assisted Recombination

Trap-assisted recombination is a semiconductor process in which electrons and holes recombine through defect or impurity states within the band gap, reducing the carriers available for electrical or optical operation. In the Shockley–Read–Hall mechanism, a trap captures one carrier and then captures a carrier of opposite charge, enabling recombination through a localized intermediate state; its rate depends on defect density, carrier lifetimes, and capture properties. In engineering, analyzing this pathway helps identify material and interface defects, predict device performance, and improve solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and other semiconductor technologies through passivation and materials processing.

Social Traps

Social traps are negative situations where people get caught in a direction or relationship that later proves to be unpleasant, with no easy way to back out of or avoid. The concept was orignally introduced by John Platt who applied psychology to Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons", where in New England herd owners could let their cattle graze in the common ground. This situation seems like a good idea, but an individual could have an advantage. If they owned more cows, the larger...

Homologous recombination techniques greatly advance Drosophila genetics by enabling the creation of molecularly precise mutations. The recent adoption of recombineering allows one to manipulate large pieces of DNA and transform them into Drosophila6. The methods presented here combine these techniques to rapidly generate large homologous recombination vectors.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Jan Riedel, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA A Dean-Stark trap is a special piece of glassware, which allows the collection of water during a reaction through an azeotropic distillation. The desire to collect water from a reaction can have various reasons. It can drive the equilibria in reactions, where water is formed as a byproduct. According to Le Chatelier's principle, a change in temperature, pressure, concentration, or volume will cause...
