Breakdown Region

The breakdown region is the portion of an electrical device’s voltage-current characteristic in which a small increase in reverse-bias voltage produces a sharp rise in current. In a semiconductor diode, this behavior occurs when the electric field becomes strong enough to release charge carriers through Zener tunneling or avalanche multiplication, while a current-limiting circuit prevents damage. Engineers use breakdown-region behavior in voltage regulators, reference circuits, surge protectors, and transient-voltage suppressors. Understanding the breakdown voltage and current limits helps researchers design reliable power-management and protection systems.

2014

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy performed on thin organ and tumor tissue successfully detected natural elements and artificially injected gadolinium (Gd), issued from Gd-based nanoparticles. Images of chemical elements reached a resolution of 100 μm and quantitative sub-mM sensitivity. The compatibility of the setup with standard optical microscopy emphasizes its potential to provide multiple images of a same biological tissue.

Breakdown of the Phillips Curve (1970s)

2026

During the 1960s, a stable trade-off between the inflation rate and the unemployment rate was observed, as represented by the Phillips curve. According to this relationship, low unemployment was generally associated with high inflation, while high unemployment was associated with low inflation. However, during the 1970s, this relationship broke down.A sharp rise in oil prices in 1973 led to higher production costs across various industries. At the same time, unemployment also increased,...

Measurement and Analysis of Atomic Hydrogen and Diatomic Molecular AlO, C2, CN, and TiO Spectra Following Laser-induced Optical Breakdown

Time-resolved atomic and diatomic molecular species are measured using LIBS. The spectra are collected at various time delays following the generation of optical breakdown plasma with Nd:YAG laser radiation and are analyzed to infer electron density and temperature.

IR Frequency Region: Fingerprint Region

2024

IR spectra are divided into two main regions: the diagnostic region and the fingerprint region. The diagnostic region of the spectrum lies above 1500 cm−1. The absorptions resulting from single-bond vibrations of the N–H, C–H, and O–H stretch at higher wavenumbers and appear on the left side of the spectrum. The stretching absorptions of the C≡C and C≡N occur between 2100–2300 cm−1. In contrast, those arising from stretching absorptions of the C=O, C=N, and C=C occur between 1600–1850 cm−1. The...
