Concentration Gradient Diffusion

Concentration gradient diffusion is the passive movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, reducing differences in concentration across space. Driven by random molecular motion, the process continues down the concentration gradient until particles become more evenly distributed, with movement influenced by factors such as temperature, distance, and the properties of the surrounding medium. In environmental systems, concentration gradient diffusion transports dissolved chemicals, gases, nutrients, and pollutants through water, soil, sediments, and air. Understanding this mechanism helps researchers predict contaminant dispersal, nutrient availability, oxygen exchange, and the fate of substances in ecosystems.

Cell migration is an important part of human development and life. In order to understand the mechanisms that can alter cell migration, we present a planar gradient diffusion system to investigate chemotaxis in a 3D collagen matrix, which allows one to overcome modern diffusion chamber limitations of existing assays.

Cell Membranes and Diffusion In order to function, cells are required to move materials in and out of their cytoplasm via their cell membranes. These membranes are semipermeable, meaning that certain molecules are allowed to pass through, but not others. This movement of molecules is mediated by the phospholipid bilayer and its embedded proteins, some of which act as transport channels for molecules that otherwise would not be able to pass through the membrane, such as ions and carbohydrates.

The Lysimeter Carbon Dioxide Gradient Facility creates a 250 to 500 µl L-1 linear carbon dioxide gradient in temperature-controlled chambers housing grassland plant communities on clay, silty clay, and sandy soil monoliths. The facility is used to determine how past and future carbon dioxide levels affect grassland carbon cycling.

A concentration cell is a type of a voltaic cell constructed by connecting two almost identical half-cells, both based on the same half-reaction and using the same electrode, differing only in the concentration of one redox species. A concentration cell's potential, therefore, is determined only by the concentration difference of the particular redox species. Consider the following voltaic cell: From the given information, the cell potential of this concentration cell can be calculated using...
