Flocculation Method

The flocculation method is a separation process that aggregates fine suspended particles into larger, heavier clusters called flocs, making them easier to remove from water and other fluids. In environmental treatment, gentle mixing brings destabilized particles into contact, while coagulants or polymeric flocculants can promote bridging and strengthen floc formation without breaking the growing aggregates. The resulting flocs settle during sedimentation or can be captured by filtration, reducing turbidity, suspended solids, and associated contaminants. This method is widely used in drinking-water purification, municipal wastewater treatment, industrial effluent management, and sludge processing, where it improves downstream treatment efficiency and water quality.

The interaction and sedimentation of the clay and bacterial cells within the marine realm, observed in natural environments, can be best investigated in a controlled lab environment. Here, we describe a detailed protocol, which outlines a novel method for measuring the sedimentation rate of clay and cyanobacterial floccules.

Virus concentration from environmental water and wastewater samples is a challenging task, carried out primarily for the identification and quantification of viruses. While several virus concentration methods have been developed and tested, we demonstrate here the effectiveness of ultrafiltration and skimmed milk flocculation for RNA viruses with different sample types.
