Small Cage Trials

Small cage trials are controlled population experiments that use confined groups of organisms to study how genetic variation changes under defined conditions. Researchers establish replicate cages, regulate mating or exposure to a treatment, and monitor traits, allele frequencies, or reproductive outcomes across generations, allowing genetic effects to be compared with environmental and control effects. In genetics, these trials support studies of inheritance, natural selection, adaptation, population dynamics, and the performance of engineered or selectively bred traits. Their relatively small scale improves experimental control while providing measurable evidence about how genetic factors influence populations over time.

Small-Cage Laboratory Trials of Genetically-Engineered Anopheline Mosquitoes

2021

The protocols reported here illustrate three alternative ways to assess the performance of genetically-engineered mosquitoes destined for vector control in laboratory-contained small cage trials. Each protocol is tailored to the specific modification the mosquito strain bears (gene drive or non-gene drive) and the types of parameters measured.

The Thoracic Cage: Sternum

2023

The thoracic or rib cage forms the body's thorax (chest) portion. Its primary function in the body is to protect vital organs in the thoracic cavity, such as the heart and the lungs. It consists of 12 pairs of ribs with their costal cartilages and the sternum. The ribs are anchored posteriorly to the 12 thoracic vertebrae (T1-T12). The sternum is the elongated bony structure on the anterior side of the thoracic cage. It consists of three parts: the manubrium, the body, and the xiphoid process.

The Thoracic Cage: Ribs

Ribs are curved, flattened bones forming the thoracic cavity wall with the thoracic muscles. There are 12 pairs of thoracic ribs. The posterior ends of all the ribs articulate with the T1–T12 thoracic vertebrae. In contrast, the anterior ends of most ribs attach to the sternum via their costal cartilages. Parts of a Typical Rib A typical rib has a head, neck, and body. The posterior end of the rib is called the head, followed by a narrow neck. The head articulates primarily with the costal facet...

The Trial Balance

A trial balance is a fundamental financial statement that provides a snapshot of a company's accounts and their balances at a specific point in time. It serves as an essential tool for verifying the accuracy of financial records by ensuring that the total debits equal the total credits. Typically prepared at the end of an accounting period, a trial balance lists all ledger accounts in the order they appear, with debit balances in the left column and credit balances in the right column. The two...
