Bladder Digestion

Bladder digestion is not a recognized physiological process; the urinary bladder primarily stores urine before its controlled elimination. In immunology and infection research, bladder function is examined through the interaction between the urothelial barrier, resident immune defenses, urine chemistry, and invading microorganisms, rather than through enzymatic food breakdown. Studying these interactions helps explain how pathogens colonize or persist in the urinary tract, how epithelial and inflammatory responses develop, and why some infections recur. Clarifying this terminology supports accurate interpretation of research on bladder biology, urinary tract infections, host–pathogen interactions, and potential diagnostic or therapeutic strategies.

Approximately 3-8 million people in the United States suffer from interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), a debilitating condition characterized in part by pelvic pain. In order to study nervous system contributions to the condition, a physiological model of urinary bladder pain is used in mice and rats.
