Blood Meal Exposure

Blood meal exposure is the process by which a blood-feeding arthropod ingests vertebrate blood, creating a temporary interface between host immunity, the vector, and infectious agents. In the arthropod gut, blood components undergo digestion while heme, host antibodies, complement proteins, and other immune factors can alter gut physiology and influence pathogen survival or transmission. Studying this response helps explain how vectors acquire, maintain, and transmit infections, while also revealing how host-derived signals regulate vector immunity and microbial communities. These insights support research on vector competence, pathogen transmission, and strategies to interrupt infection cycles.

Meal Duration as a Measure of Orofacial Nociceptive Responses in Rodents

A lengthening in meal duration represents orofacial nociceptive behavior in rodents similar to the guarding behavior of humans with orofacial pain. Eating is a behavior that requires no training or animal manipulation, requires cortical participation, and is not competing with other experimentally induced behaviors, distinguishing this assay from alternative reflex or operant measurements.

To facilitate the effort in seeking more economic and environment-friendly formulations of natural product-based wood adhesives, this work demonstrates the preparation and testing of plant seed-based wood adhesives. This protocol allows one to assess plant seed-based agricultural products as suitable candidates for the substitution of synthetic-based wood adhesives.

In the current climate of scarce resources, new technologies are emerging that allow researchers to conduct studies cheaper, faster and with more precision. Here we describe the development of a bead-based salivary antibody multiplex immunoassay to measure human exposure to multiple environmental pathogens simultaneously.

A whole-body nanoparticle aerosol inhalation exposure facility was constructed for nano-sized titanium dioxide (TiO2) inhalation toxicology studies. This system provides nano-TiO2 aerosol test atmospheres that have: 1) a steady mass concentration; 2) a homogenous composition free of contaminants; and 3) a stable particle size distribution during aerosol generation.
