Mouse Ankle Joint

The mouse ankle joint is a synovial articulation that connects the lower leg and foot, providing a defined site for studying musculoskeletal structure, inflammation, and infection. Its synovial lining, joint fluid, cartilage, bone, and surrounding tissues can respond to microbial invasion or immune activation through vascular changes, cytokine release, leukocyte recruitment, and tissue remodeling. In immunology and infection research, the ankle joint supports analysis of arthritis, localized inflammatory responses, pathogen-associated tissue damage, and therapeutic effects. Researchers can evaluate joint swelling, cellular infiltration, cytokine production, and histopathological changes to connect immune mechanisms with disease severity and treatment outcomes.

The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

The ankle-subtalar complex joint (ASCJ) is the core of the foot and plays a key role in balance control in daily activities. Sports injuries often lead to instability in this joint. Here, we describe a mouse model of ligament transection-induced instability of the ASCJ.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The ankle and foot provide the foundation for the body and the stability needed for upright posture and ambulation. Because of its weight-bearing function, the ankle joint is a common site of injury among athletes and in the general population. Ankle injuries occur as a result of both acute trauma and repetitive overuse (such as running). The ankle is a fairly simple joint, consisting of the articulation between the...

In Vivo Imaging Uncovers the Migratory Behavior of Leukocytes within the Joints

In vivo imaging of the joints is a valuable technique for uncovering the migratory behavior of leukocytes and molecular dynamics within the inflamed joints. Here, we present a detailed protocol for in vivo imaging of the joints using a murine model of type II collagen-induced arthritis (CIA).
