Mouse Infection

Mouse infection is the experimental introduction of a pathogen into mice to study how infection develops and how the host responds, making it an important model in immunology and infection research. Researchers administer bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi through defined routes and monitor pathogen burden, tissue changes, innate immune signaling, cytokine production, and the development of antibody- and T-cell-mediated responses. These studies help reveal host-pathogen interactions, identify protective or harmful immune mechanisms, and evaluate vaccines, antimicrobial or antiviral treatments, and disease interventions before clinical research.

(2022)This video demonstrates the processing of lungs from a mouse co-infected with a pathogenic bacterium and a virus. Mincing, homogenizing, and plating the lung tissue allows quantification of bacterial load, indicating bacterial spread to the lungs and disease severity.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) are important human respiratory pathogens. To understand the pathogenicity of IAVs and to perform preclinical testing of novel vaccine approaches, animal models mimicking human physiology are required. Here, we describe techniques to evaluate IAV pathogenesis, humoral responses and vaccine efficacy using a mouse model of infection.

Source: Patras, K. A., Doran, K. S. A Murine Model of Group B Streptococcus Vaginal Colonization. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates the preparation and vaginal inoculation of a hormone-treated female mouse with Group B Streptococcus to model infection. It explains how to culture and prepare the bacteria, administer the inoculum into the vaginal lumen, and ensure successful infection.
