Plasma Insulin Analysis

Plasma insulin analysis is the measurement of circulating insulin concentration in blood plasma, providing a direct indicator of endocrine control of glucose homeostasis. After plasma is separated from blood, immunoassays use antibodies to selectively capture insulin and generate a measurable colorimetric or chemiluminescent signal proportional to its concentration; calibration standards convert this signal into an analyte value. Researchers use these measurements to assess pancreatic beta-cell activity, insulin resistance, and metabolic responses during immune activation or infection. Combined with glucose measurements and other biomarkers, plasma insulin data support studies of immunometabolism, disease mechanisms, and treatment effects.

Transcellular protein interactions are important determinants of pancreatic beta-cell function. Detailed here is a method—adapted from a coculture model of synaptogenesis—for investigating how specific transmembrane proteins influence insulin secretion. Transfected HEK293 cells express proteins of interest; beta cells do not need to be transfected or otherwise directly perturbed.

Insulin Injection and Hemolymph Extraction to Measure Insulin Sensitivity in Adult Drosophila melanogaster

Conserved insulin signaling pathways found in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster make this organism a potential tool for modeling metabolic disorders including type II diabetes. To this end, it is critical to establish physiological assays to effectively measure systemic insulin action in peripheral glucose disposal in the adult fly.

Evaluation of Blood Lactate and Plasma Insulin During High-intensity Exercise by Antecubital Vein Catheterization
