Tissue Sodium Quantification

Tissue sodium quantification is the measurement of sodium concentration and distribution within organs or other biological tissues, providing a noninvasive indicator of altered tissue physiology. In sodium magnetic resonance imaging, radiofrequency pulses detect signals from naturally occurring 23Na nuclei; calibration, signal acquisition, and spatial mapping then estimate local sodium content, although its lower concentration and faster signal decay require specialized imaging methods. In immunology and infection research, tissue sodium measurements can help characterize inflammation, edema, cellular dysfunction, and changes in tissue microenvironments, supporting investigation of disease progression, treatment responses, and mechanisms that influence immune activity.

Regulation of Sodium and Potassium

2024

The regulation of sodium and potassium ion concentrations in the human body is a complex process governed primarily by hormones such as aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). Sodium Regulation Sodium ions make up approximately 90% of extracellular cations, with a normal blood plasma concentration of 136–148 mEq/L. A decrease in blood volume and pressure triggers the release of renin from granular cells in the juxtaglomerular complex (JGC), primarily in...
