Systematic Review

A systematic review is a structured research method that identifies, evaluates, and synthesizes relevant studies addressing a focused question, helping reduce selective interpretation and clarify the strength of available evidence. Researchers typically develop an explicit protocol, search multiple information sources, apply predefined inclusion criteria, assess study quality or risk of bias, and combine findings through narrative or statistical synthesis. In information literacy, systematic reviews provide a model for turning an information need into a searchable question, evaluating sources critically, and documenting decisions transparently. They support evidence-based practice, reveal gaps or inconsistencies in research, and help learners and professionals make well-founded judgments about complex topics.

A systematic review is a rigorous, transparent method for identifying, evaluating, and combining all relevant research to address a specific question. For instance, a review might examine whether exercise reduces anxiety. Unlike narrative reviews, systematic reviews follow predefined protocols to reduce bias and ensure comprehensive coverage of the available evidence. Many follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, which include...

Peer review is a central quality-control process in academic publishing. Before research is shared with the scholarly community, experts in the relevant field evaluate manuscripts to ensure that the findings are accurate, original, and methodologically sound. This review process helps maintain the reliability of the scientific record and reinforces trust in published literature. Submission and Editorial Screening The process begins when an author submits a manuscript to an academic journal. The...

Endobronchial ultrasound-guided sampling using transbronchial needle aspiration plays a key role in staging and diagnosing lung cancer. We propose a systematic stepwise approach dividing the procedure into six landmarks that should be taught to new operators.

Random and Systematic Errors

Scientists always try their best to record measurements with the utmost accuracy and precision. However, sometimes errors do occur. These errors can be random or systematic. Random errors are observed due to the inconsistency or fluctuation in the measurement process, or variations in the quantity itself that is being measured. Such errors fluctuate from being greater than or less than the true value in repeated measurements. Consider a scientist measuring the length of an earthworm using a...
