Factoring Expressions

Factoring expressions is the process of rewriting a mathematical expression as a product of simpler factors, making its structure easier to analyze and use. It works by identifying a greatest common factor or recognizing patterns such as the difference of two squares and quadratic trinomials, then expressing the original sum or polynomial as multiplied terms whose expansion returns the starting expression. In mathematics, factoring supports simplification, reveals zeros and key features of functions, and provides an efficient method for solving polynomial equations. It also connects symbolic manipulation with graphing, algebraic modeling, and later work in calculus and higher mathematics.

This article outlines the protocol for quantifying the percentage of Tissue Factor (TF)-positive platelets using whole blood flow cytometry, assessing the protein: (1) intracellularly in resting conditions, and (2) on the cell surface, in both resting and activated conditions. Guidance is also provided for evaluating TF-positive platelets in platelet-rich plasma.

The method described here is used to induce the apoptotic signaling cascade at defined steps in order to dissect the activity of an anti-apoptotic bacterial effector protein. This method can also be used for inducible expression of pro-apoptotic or toxic proteins, or for dissecting interference with other signaling pathways.
