Bone Metabolism Markers

Bone metabolism markers are biochemical indicators of bone formation and resorption that reflect the activity of bone-remodeling cells and help assess skeletal health. Formation markers, produced during osteoblast activity, include bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin, while resorption markers arise when osteoclasts degrade bone matrix, releasing collagen fragments such as CTX into blood or urine. Measuring these markers provides a dynamic view of bone turnover that complements bone mineral density testing, which reflects accumulated mineral content. In medicine, they support evaluation of metabolic bone disorders, help monitor responses to antiresorptive or bone-forming therapies, and may identify changes in treatment effectiveness earlier than structural measurements.

Metabolic reprogramming is a characteristic and prerequisite for M1 and M2 macrophage polarization. This manuscript describes an assay for the measurement of fundamental parameters of glycolysis and mitochondrial function in mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages. This tool can be applied to investigate how particular factors affect the macrophage’s metabolism and phenotype.

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.

An Introduction to Cell Metabolism

2023

In cells, critical molecules are either built by joining together individual units like amino acids or nucleotides, or broken down into smaller components. Respectively, the reactions responsible for this are referred to as anabolic and catabolic. These reactions require or produce energy typically in the form of a “high-energy” molecule called ATP. Together, these processes make up “Cell Metabolism,” and are hallmarks of healthy, living cells.JoVE’s introduction to cell metabolism briefly...
