Capsular Polysaccharide Detection

Capsular polysaccharide detection is the identification of carbohydrate-rich capsules surrounding certain microorganisms, an important approach for characterizing pathogens and supporting medical diagnosis. Detection methods exploit the capsule’s physical properties or antigenic structure: negative stains reveal a clear halo around the cell, while capsule-specific antibodies can bind polysaccharide epitopes and produce visible swelling, agglutination, or an immunoassay signal. These approaches help distinguish encapsulated strains, identify clinically significant organisms, and investigate capsule-associated virulence and immune evasion. In medicine and microbiology, accurate detection supports pathogen classification, surveillance, and evaluation of host responses to capsular antigens.

Biosynthesis of Polysaccharides

2025

Polysaccharides such as glycogen and starch are synthesized from nucleoside diphosphate sugars, primarily uridine diphosphate glucose (UDPG) and adenosine diphosphate glucose (ADPG). These activated glucose donors act as key intermediates in carbohydrate metabolism and biosynthesis. UDPG primarily involves glycogen synthesis in animals and many bacteria, while ADPG plays a fundamental role in starch synthesis in plants and certain bacteria.UDPG is formed when glucose-1-phosphate reacts with...

2026

The Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB) is an intraocular implant that encapsulates silicone oil within a flexible capsule to reduce silicone oil-related complications. This protocol describes the surgical implantation of the FCVB via scleral incision for the treatment of complex retinal detachment and ocular trauma.

Cellulose and Pectic Polysaccharides

2023

Every plant cell has a cell wall that protects the cell, provides structural support, and gives the cell shape. Cellulose, the main structural component of the plant cell wall, makes up over 30% of plant matter. It is the most abundant organic compound on earth. Cellulose is an unbranched polysaccharide composed of linear chains of glucose molecules linked by β (1→4) glycosidic bonds. As a cell matures, its cell wall specializes according to its type. For example, the parenchyma cells of...
