Cognitive Assessment

Cognitive assessment is the systematic evaluation of mental functions such as attention, memory, language, executive function, and processing speed, helping clinicians characterize cognitive strengths and difficulties. It uses structured tasks, interviews, and standardized scoring to compare an individual’s performance with expected patterns while considering age, education, and cultural context. In medicine, these measures support screening, differential assessment, diagnosis, and monitoring of conditions that affect cognition, including neurodegenerative disease, stroke, brain injury, and psychiatric disorders. Repeated assessments can track change over time, inform rehabilitation and treatment planning, and help researchers evaluate clinical outcomes and disease progression.

We tested the usability of a tablet-computer-based application (EmoCogMeter) in investigating the effects of age on cognition. Results show an age-related cognitive decline, thereby proving the usability of our application. Findings underline the great clinical and practical potential of a tablet-based application for detection and monitoring of cognitive dysfunction.

An Introduction to Cognition

2023

Cognition encompasses mental processes such as memory, perception, decision-making reasoning and language. Cognitive scientists are using a combination of behavioral and neuropsychological techniques to investigate the underlying neural substrates of cognition. They are interested in understanding how information is perceived, processed and how does it affect the final execution of behaviors. With this knowledge, researchers hope to develop new treatments for individuals with cognitive...

Eye-Tracking Control to Assess Cognitive Functions in Patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

2016

Cognitive deficits are common in about one third of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neurological condition leading to progressive impairments in speech and movement abilities. To conduct cognitive tests in patients unable to speak or write a reliable and easy to administer eye-tracking paradigm was developed.
