Digital Surgical Guides

Digital surgical guides are patient-specific planning and guidance tools that help clinicians translate medical images and virtual surgical plans into precise intraoperative action. They are created by processing imaging data, such as CT or MRI scans, to model anatomy and define the intended position, angle, depth, or pathway for an instrument or implant; the resulting guide may be manufactured or integrated with digital navigation systems. In medicine, these tools support procedures including orthopedic, dental, craniofacial, and neurosurgical interventions. By improving spatial accuracy and procedural consistency, digital surgical guides can aid complex operations, reduce avoidable tissue disruption, and support more predictable clinical outcomes.

A workflow for creating three-dimensional (3D) virtual hybrid models has been designed based on cone-beam computed tomography dataset and intraoral optical scans utilizing radiographic image segmentation methods and free-form surface modeling. Digital models are used for the virtual planning of reconstructive dentoalveolar surgical procedures.

Surgical Technique for the Implantation of a Biomimetic Artificial Intervertebral Disc in a Goat Animal Model

2025

This study presents a novel surgical technique for implanting a biomimetic artificial intervertebral disc (BioAID). The method ensures precise placement and stability, aiming to restore cervical spine function using a goat model. This technique shows promise for clinical application in both human and canine patients suffering from cervical spine myelopathy.

Measuring Engagement of Spectators of Social Digital Games

2021

We propose a methodology that enables measuring engagement of spectators in a social digital game combining physiological and self-reported data. As this digital game involves a group of freely moving people, the experience is filmed using a synchronizing technique that links physiological data with events in the game.

Surgery is the gold standard for accessible arteriovenious malformations (AVMs), and pre-operative embolization can simplify this procedure. We describe our approach for staged endovascular embolization and open resection of AVMs, and provide a representative clinical example highlighting the advantages of a comprehensively trained neurovascular surgeon leading a multi-disciplinary clinical team.
