Adult Diarrhea

Adult diarrhea is the passage of loose or watery stools, often reflecting disrupted intestinal fluid absorption or accelerated transit. It may result from infections, medications, dietary factors, inflammation, malabsorption, or disorders that increase secretion and intestinal motility, allowing less time for water and electrolyte reabsorption. In medicine, evaluation considers duration, stool characteristics, exposure history, associated symptoms, and signs of dehydration, with laboratory or stool testing used when clinically indicated. Management centers on restoring fluids and electrolytes while addressing the underlying cause, and recognizing warning signs such as blood in the stool, severe pain, persistent fever, or worsening dehydration helps guide timely care.

Source: Nag, D., et.al. Quantifying Vibrio cholerae Colonization and Diarrhea in the Adult Zebrafish Model. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the inoculation of adult zebrafish with a pathogenic Vibrio cholerae strain to study intestinal colonization and disease outcomes. It shows how bacterial toxins disrupt intestinal integrity, leading to fluid leakage, mucus secretion, and watery diarrhea before the fish are prepared for further analysis.

Drugs for Treatment of Diarrhea-Predominant IBS

2024

Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a subtype of IBS characterized primarily by frequent, loose, or watery stools, abdominal pain, and abdominal discomfort. Therapeutic approaches to managing IBS-D include dietary changes, stress management techniques, and pharmaceutical interventions. Two specific drugs used in the treatment are alosetron (Lotronex) and eluxadoline (Viberzi). Alosetron, a 5-HT3 antagonist, works by slowing the movement of stools in the gut, reducing bowel...

Adult Stem Cells

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that divide and produce more stem cells or progenitor cells that differentiate into mature, specialized cell types. All the cells in the body are generated from stem cells in the early embryo, but small populations of stem cells are also present in many adult tissues including the bone marrow, brain, skin, and gut. These adult stem cells typically produce the various cell types found in that tissue—to replace cells that are damaged or to continuously renew...
