Gel Coated Nylon Sheets

Gel coated nylon sheets are composite biomaterial surfaces that combine a strong, flexible nylon substrate with a hydrated gel coating, creating an interface suited to biomedical and laboratory use. The nylon provides structural support, while the gel forms a water-rich layer that can modify surface contact, diffusion, adhesion, and transport of dissolved substances; performance depends on coating composition, thickness, and stability. In medicine, these sheets can support research on cell interactions, membrane behavior, wound-contact materials, and diagnostic platforms. Their tunable surface properties make them useful for studying how engineered interfaces influence biological responses and for developing more functional medical materials.

This protocol shows a plant sample preparation method for light-sheet microscopy. The setup is characterized by mounting the plant vertically on the surface of a gel and letting it grow in controlled bright conditions. This allows long-term observation of plant organ development in standardized conditions.

Native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is a fundamental tool for analyzing RNA-protein interactions. Traditionally most experiments have used vertical gels. However, horizontal gels provide several advantages, such as the opportunity to monitor complexes during electrophoresis. We provide a detailed protocol for generating and using horizontal native gel electrophoresis.

Gel Purification

2023

Gel purification is used to recover DNA fragments after electrophoretic separation. DNA recovery from an agarose gel includes three basic steps: binding, washing and eluting from a silica column. DNA is believed to bind to silica in the presence of high salt via a salt bridge. Following binding, DNA is washed of impurities and eluted under low salt conditions disrupting this interaction. This video goes through a step-by-step, generalized procedure for cutting out a band from the gel, gel...
