Lactated Ringer Solution

Lactated Ringer solution is a balanced isotonic crystalloid used in medicine to restore circulating fluid volume and replace key electrolytes. Administered intravenously, it supplies sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and lactate; the lactate is metabolized, primarily in the liver, to support bicarbonate generation and help maintain acid–base balance. Clinicians use it for fluid resuscitation and maintenance during conditions such as dehydration, trauma, burns, surgery, and other causes of extracellular fluid loss. Its electrolyte composition more closely resembles plasma than that of simple saline, making it an important option in many acute-care settings.

Colorimetric Assay for Quantification of Lactate in Test Samples

2025

This video describes a colorimetric assay for lactate measurement in cell lysates by using the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme. This enzyme converts lactate into pyruvate, along with the conversion of NAD to NADH that reacts with tetrazolium dyes and gives a colored product that can be measured spectrophotometrically to quantitate the lactate.

Making Solutions in the Laboratory

2023

The ability to successfully make solutions is a basic laboratory skill performed in virtually all biological and chemical experiments. A solution is a homogenous mixture of solute dissolved in bulk liquid known as the solvent. Solutions can be described by their solute concentration, a measure of how much solute is present per unit of solution. In this video, a step-by-step procedure for how to make a water-based, or aqueous, solution for biological applications is presented. The video...

A Lactate Dehydrogenase Release Assay To Detect Macrophage Death Following Nigericin Exposure

2025

This video demonstrates the lactate dehydrogenase assay to detect inflammasome-mediated macrophage death. The macrophages are exposed to lipopolysaccharide for priming, followed by exposure to nigericin to cause inflammasome-induced cell death, which is determined by the lactate dehydrogenase assay.
