Lipid Profile Regulation

Lipid profile regulation is the coordinated control of circulating cholesterol, triglycerides, and lipoproteins, including LDL and HDL, that helps maintain metabolic balance and cardiovascular health. The liver synthesizes and clears lipoproteins, while intestinal fat absorption, LDL-receptor activity, lipoprotein lipase, and hormonal and nutritional signals adjust lipid transport and storage in blood and tissues. In medicine, understanding these processes supports interpretation of lipid tests, identification of dyslipidemia, and selection of interventions such as dietary changes or lipid-lowering therapy. Monitoring these responses helps assess treatment effectiveness and reduce atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk.

2014

Molecular signaling through both estrogen and microRNAs are critical in breast cancer development and growth. Estrogen activates the estrogen receptors, which are transcription factors. Many transcription factors can regulate the expression of microRNAs, and estrogen-regulated microRNAs can be profiled using different large-scale techniques.

Dopamine is distinctly regulated in the midbrain nuclei, which contain the cell bodies and dendrites of the dopamine neurons. Here we describe a dissection and sample-handling approach to maximize results, and thus conclusions and insights, on dopamine regulation in the midbrain nuclei of the substantia nigra (SN) and ventral tegmental area (VTA) in rodents.

Exploring the Regulation of Lipid Droplet Catabolism through Lipophagy

2025

Lipophagy is a selective form of autophagy that involves the degradation of lipid droplets. Dysfunctions in this process are associated with cancer development. However, the precise mechanisms are not yet fully understood. This protocol describes quantitative imaging approaches to better understand the interplay between autophagy, lipid metabolism, and cancer progression.

2013

Mammalian integument contains solvent-extractable lipids that can provide chemical compositions characteristic of individual species. This paper presents a routine method for separating broad lipid classes isolated from integumentary tissues using thin layer chromatography and determining the triacylglyceride profile by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry.
