Maxillary Protrusion

Maxillary protrusion is a dentofacial condition in which the upper jaw or upper front teeth project excessively forward relative to the lower jaw, affecting facial balance, bite function, and appearance. It may result from forward skeletal positioning or growth of the maxilla, proclination of the upper incisors, or a combination of both, often producing increased overjet and a convex facial profile. Clinicians assess the condition through facial and intraoral examination, dental records, and cephalometric imaging. Treatment can include orthodontic tooth movement, growth modification during development, or orthognathic surgery for severe skeletal discrepancies, supporting accurate diagnosis and individualized care.

The zebrafish maxillary barbel is an integumentary sense organ containing ectodermal, mesodermal and neural crest derivatives. Importantly, the adult barbel can regenerate after proximal amputation. This video introduces maxillary barbel development and demonstrates a surgical protocol to induce regeneration, followed by collection, embedding and downstream imaging of barbel specimens.

Types of Membrane Protrusions

2023

The protrusion of the cell surface is an initial step for several cellular processes, including cell migration, phagocytosis, and neurite outgrowth. These membrane protrusions are a result of cytoskeletal rearrangement. The most widely observed cell protrusions include lamellipodia, pseudopodia, filopodia, microvilli, invadopodia, and podosomes. These protrusions can be of two types — static or dynamic. The microvilli, an example of stable protrusions, are finger-like projections with a...
