Muscle Morphometry

Muscle morphometry is the quantitative assessment of skeletal muscle size, shape, and architecture, providing objective information about tissue health and function in medicine. It uses anatomical measurements such as muscle volume, cross-sectional area, thickness, length, and fiber arrangement, often derived from imaging or direct structural analysis, to characterize changes over time. These measurements help clinicians and researchers evaluate muscle atrophy, hypertrophy, injury, aging, and disease-related wasting, while supporting diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation monitoring, and studies of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders. Standardized morphometric data can also improve comparisons across patients, populations, and clinical interventions.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Experience shapes the brain. It is well understood that our brains are different as a result of learning. While many experience-related changes manifest themselves at the microscopic level, for example by neurochemical adjustments in the behavior of individual neurons, we may also examine anatomical changes to the structure of the brain at a macroscopic level. One famous example of this kind of change...

We describe a method to directly measure muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics and fatigability of isolated skeletal muscles in an in vitro system using field stimulation. Valuable information on Ca2+ handling properties and contractile machinery of the muscle can be obtained using different stimulating protocols.
