Palladium Porphyrin

Palladium porphyrins are synthetic coordination compounds in which a palladium ion is held within a porphyrin macrocycle, a ring-shaped structure related to natural heme. Their electronic structure enables efficient intersystem crossing after light absorption, producing long-lived excited triplet states that can transfer energy to molecular oxygen and generate singlet oxygen or other reactive oxygen species. These properties make palladium porphyrins useful as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy, where localized illumination can damage diseased cells, and as optical probes for oxygen or cellular environments. Their tunable substituents and metal-centered chemistry support research in cancer treatment, bioimaging, and targeted drug-delivery systems.

2023

Source: Vy M. Dong and Faben Cruz, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the concept of a palladium-catalyzed cross coupling. The set-up of a typical Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reaction will be illustrated. Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reactions have had a profound effect on how synthetic chemists create molecules. These reactions have enabled chemists to construct bonds in new and more efficient ways. Such reactions have found widespread...
