Posterior Cingulate Cortex

The posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) is a medial brain region that integrates information involved in memory, attention, self-referential thought, and internally directed cognition. Through interconnected networks linking the hippocampus, medial prefrontal cortex, and other association areas, the PCC helps evaluate contextual information, retrieve autobiographical memories, and shift between internal and externally focused attention. In medicine, functional imaging and lesion studies use PCC activity and connectivity to investigate Alzheimer’s disease, depression, epilepsy, and disorders of consciousness. Understanding PCC function can improve interpretation of neurological symptoms and support the development of biomarkers for diagnosis, disease monitoring, and treatment.

Generation of Medial Thalamus-Anterior Cingulate Cortex Slices from Mouse Brains

2025

The video demonstrates the preparation of medial thalamus-anterior cingulate cortex (MT-ACC) slices from mouse brains. A mouse's brain is dissected, cuts are made to expose the MT-ACC pathway, and slices are generated using a vibratome. The MT-ACC slices are then maintained in oxygenated artificial cerebrospinal fluid.

Investigating the Function of Deep Cortical and Subcortical Structures Using Stereotactic Electroencephalography: Lessons from the Anterior Cingulate Cortex

Stereotactic Electroencephalography (SEEG) is an operative technique used in epilepsy surgery to help localize seizure foci. It also affords a unique opportunity to investigate brain function. Here we describe how SEEG can be used to investigate cognitive processes in human subjects.

Monitoring the Brain Cortex with a Multi-Electrode Array in Response to Seizure-Inducing Agents

2025

In this video, the effects of transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) on brain slices containing the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and thalamus regions are investigated, using a multi-electrode array (MEA) to measure electric signals. By delivering electric pulses and infusing seizure-inducing drugs, the study investigates the ACC response to seizures.

Implantation of Electrodes into a Mouse Cortex for Electrocorticographic Recordings

Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation of the Posterior Medial Frontal Cortex to Experimentally Reduce Ideological Threat Responses

2018

Threats reliably evoke shifts in high-level ideological investment, but little work to date has explored the neural mechanisms underlying these dynamics. This paper describes how continuous theta burst transcranial magnetic stimulation may be employed to test the contribution of the posterior medial frontal cortex (and/or other regions) to threat-related ideological shifts.
