Preoperative Mri

Preoperative MRI is magnetic resonance imaging performed before surgery to characterize disease, map anatomy, and support treatment planning without ionizing radiation. It uses a strong magnetic field and radiofrequency pulses to alter the alignment of hydrogen nuclei, then records their signals to generate detailed, multiplanar images of soft tissues and surrounding structures. In medicine, clinicians use these scans to assess tumor extent, vascular or neurological involvement, tissue planes, and other findings that may affect the surgical approach. By improving anatomical localization and preoperative decision-making, preoperative MRI can help guide safer procedures, anticipate technical challenges, and support communication among multidisciplinary teams.

This protocol describes the steps and data analysis required to successfully perform optogenetic functional magnetic resonance imaging (ofMRI). ofMRI is a novel technique that combines high-field fMRI readout with optogenetic stimulation, allowing for cell type-specific mapping of functional neural circuits and their dynamics across the whole living brain.

Preoperational Thought IV: Numbers

2026

Piaget’s preoperational stage, from about ages 2 to 7, is characterized by rapid growth in symbolic thinking. Children increasingly use words, images, and objects to represent ideas, although their reasoning remains largely intuitive. During this period, number sense develops from memorized counting toward an understanding of quantity and basic arithmetic.Counting and CardinalityChildren younger than age 3 may recite number words without fully understanding their numerical meaning. During the...

Here we outline the procedure for MRI-guided repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation to the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex as an experimental treatment for major depressive disorder.

Preoperational Thought I: The Symbolic Function

Jean Piaget’s preoperational stage of cognitive development spans approximately ages 2 to 7. During this period, children increasingly think symbolically but are not yet able to perform logical mental operations consistently. Symbols are words, pictures, numbers, or objects that stand for something else. For example, the word "dog" can represent an entire category of animals, even when no dog is physically present. This ability allows children to mentally represent people, objects, and events...

Synthesis of an In vivo MRI-detectable Apoptosis Probe

Early detection of apoptosis may identify at-risk cell populations in a variety of diseases. Here we demonstrate a method to link an early apoptosis-detection protein (Annexin V) to a MRI-detectable iron oxide nanoparticle (SPIO). This method may be extended to other proteins of interest to generate MRI-detectable molecular imaging probes.
