Respiratory Correlation Model

A respiratory correlation model is a mathematical or computational framework that describes relationships among breathing variables, helping researchers and clinicians interpret how respiratory measurements change together. It works by synchronizing and analyzing signals such as airflow, respiratory volume, pressure, breathing rate, or gas-exchange measures, then using correlation or predictive modeling to identify meaningful patterns. In medicine, these models support assessment of respiratory function, comparison of physiological states, and interpretation of data from clinical monitoring or pulmonary studies. They can also help evaluate disease-related changes and inform respiratory care, although model performance depends on measurement quality, appropriate variables, and validation in relevant patient populations.

Correlation means that there is a relationship between two or more variables (such as ice cream consumption and crime), but this relationship does not necessarily imply cause and effect. When two variables are correlated, it simply means that as one variable changes, so does the other. We can measure correlation by calculating a statistic known as a correlation coefficient. A correlation coefficient is a number from -1 to +1 that indicates the strength and direction of the relationship between...

We describe a rat model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that reveals the persistent alterations in neuroendocrine function and the delayed long-term, exaggerated fear response, characteristic of PTSD patients. The animal model and methods described here are useful for correlating biomarkers in brain nuclei, which are mechanistic but cannot be measured in patients, with biomarkers in peripheral white blood cells, which can.

The present protocol provides a detailed step-by-step description of the procedures required to execute measurements of respiratory system mechanics as well as the assessment of airway responsiveness to inhaled methacholine in mice using the forced oscillation technique (flexiVent; SCIREQ Inc, Montreal, Qc, Canada).

Lavage-induced Surfactant Depletion in Pigs As a Model of the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

Repeated pulmonary lavages in anesthetized pigs induce lung injury resembling major aspects of human acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). For this purpose the lungs are repeatedly lavaged with 0.9% saline at 37 °C. The goal of the protocol is a reproducible mitigation of gas exchange and hemodynamics for research in ARDS.
