Saline Solution Contact Impedance

Saline solution contact impedance is the electrical opposition measured at the interface between a saline medium and a contacting electrode or sensor, an important factor in the accuracy and safety of medical measurements. When a small alternating current passes through the interface, impedance reflects both ionic conduction through the solution and charge accumulation at the electrode surface; saline concentration, contact area, pressure, and measurement frequency can influence the result. Assessing contact impedance helps verify electrode placement, identify poor or unstable connections, and improve the reliability of bioelectric recordings and other electrodiagnostic procedures. It also supports evaluation and calibration of conductive medical interfaces.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electrical resistance is the ability of an electrical circuit element to resist the flow of electricity. Resistance is defined by Ohm's Law: (Equation 1) Where is the voltage and is the current. Ohm's law is useful for determining the resistance of ideal resistors. However, many circuit elements are more complex and can't be described by...

A Hypertonic Saline Injection Technique for Inducing Glaucoma in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates glaucoma induction in an anesthetized rat by injecting hypertonic saline into the episcleral vein. The saline enters the trabecular meshwork via Schlemm's canal, causing tissue scarring, which blocks aqueous humor outflow and raises intraocular pressure. The elevated pressure damages retinal ganglion cells, leading to glaucoma.

Cellular Impedance-Based Survival Kinetics Assay to Assess Virus Survival

Embryonic stages are the most susceptible to xenobiotics. Although chemical toxicity depends on salinity, no method exists to test the salinity dependence of toxicity to aquatic organisms. Here, we describe a new and high-throughput method for determining the salinity dependence of toxicity to aquatic embryos.

Begin with a culture of Alishewanella, a Gram-negative, salt-tolerant bacterium.Next, streak the culture onto agar plates containing increasing concentrations of sodium chloride to simulate varying levels of saline stress.Overlay each plate with a layer of unsolidified medium to prevent oxygen diffusion and maintain the culture in an oxygen-limited environment.Seal and incubate the plates at an optimum temperature to support bacterial growth.During incubation, the bacterium exhibits varying...
