Surgical Nerve Exposure

Surgical nerve exposure is a technique used to identify, visualize, and access a peripheral nerve during an operation while limiting injury to surrounding tissues. Surgeons plan an approach using anatomical landmarks, then dissect through tissue planes and carefully separate structures until the nerve is clearly defined, preserving its continuity and minimizing traction, compression, or disruption of its blood supply. This technique supports procedures such as nerve repair, decompression, tumor removal, and management of traumatic injuries. Accurate exposure improves surgical control, helps distinguish normal nerve from damaged or abnormal tissue, and contributes to safer treatment and functional recovery.
