Tibial Osteotomy

Tibial osteotomy is a surgical procedure that cuts and realigns the tibia to correct abnormal leg alignment, often relieving uneven stress across the knee. By creating a controlled opening or closing wedge in the upper tibia, the surgeon changes the mechanical axis of the limb so that weight shifts away from a damaged compartment toward healthier cartilage. In medicine, this joint-preserving approach is used for selected patients with unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis, varus or valgus deformity, or malunion after injury. It can reduce pain, improve function, and delay or avoid knee replacement while preserving the native joint.

Source: Brakkee, E. M., et al. Surgery and Behavioral Testing in the Tibial Neuroma Transposition Model in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2023).This video demonstrates a procedure to generate a rat tibial neuroma transposition (TNT) model. After exposing the tibial nerve in the hind leg of an anesthetized rat, transect the nerve. Next, create a subcutaneous tunnel, thread the severed nerve through the tunnel, and suture it in place. In the absence of a target for reinnervation, disorganized axonal...

This protocol describes an osteosynthesis technique using an intramedullary locking nail for standardized fixation of femur osteotomies, which can be used to analyze normal and defective bone healing in mice.

Surgical Angiogenesis in Porcine Tibial Allotransplantation: A New Large Animal Bone Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Model

Currently any kind of vascularized composite allotransplantation depends on long-term-immunosuppression, difficult to support for non-life-critical indications. We present a new porcine tibial VCA model that can be used to study bone VCA and demonstrate the use of surgical angiogenesis to maintain bone viability without the need of long-term immune-modulation.

One constraint of preclinical research in the field of bone repair is the lack of experimental control over the local mechanical environment within a healing bone lesion. We report the design and use of an external fixator for bone repair with the ability to change fixator stiffness in vivo.
