Ultrasound Sonography

Ultrasound sonography is a noninvasive medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize internal structures in real time. A transducer sends sound pulses into the body, and tissue interfaces reflect echoes that the system analyzes according to their timing and strength to create an image. Doppler ultrasound additionally measures changes in echo frequency to assess blood flow. Clinicians use sonography to evaluate organs, soft tissues, blood vessels, and fetal development, often without ionizing radiation. Its portability, real-time imaging, and repeatability support diagnosis, procedure guidance, and ongoing monitoring across many areas of medicine.

Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) is increasingly being utilized in airway management. Presented here are some clinical utilities of POCUS, including differentiating endotracheal and esophageal intubation, identification of the cricothyroid membrane in the event a surgical airway is required, and measuring anterior neck soft tissue to predict difficult airway management. ...

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

Source: Amelia R. Adelsperger, Evan H. Phillips, and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana High-frequency ultrasound systems are used to acquire high resolution images. Here, the use of a state-of-the-art system will be demonstrated to image the morphology and hemodynamics of small pulsatile arteries and veins found in mice and rats. Ultrasound is a relatively inexpensive, portable, and versatile method for the noninvasive...
