Microct Scanning

MicroCT scanning, or micro-computed tomography, is a nondestructive X-ray imaging technique that produces high-resolution, three-dimensional views of internal structures, making it valuable for examining anatomy and materials without physical sectioning. During scanning, an object or specimen rotates through an X-ray beam while detectors record attenuation from multiple angles; reconstruction algorithms then convert these projections into cross-sectional slices and volumetric datasets. In medicine, microCT is particularly useful for assessing trabecular and cortical bone, dental structures, small-animal anatomy, and implanted devices, often revealing features below the resolution of conventional clinical CT. These measurements support research on bone disease, tissue engineering, implant design, and treatment outcomes.

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut It's a little-known fact that the discovery and (inadvertent) use of X-rays garnered the first ever Nobel Prize in Physics. The famous X-ray image of Dr. Röntgen's wife's hand from 1895 that sent shock waves through the scientific community looks like most modern day 2D medical X-ray images. Though it is not the newest technology, X-ray absorption...

A method of functional imaging of mouse brown adipose tissue (BAT) is described in which cold-stimulated uptake of 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in BAT is non-invasively assessed with a standardized micro-PET/CT protocol. This method is robust and sensitive to detect differences in BAT activities in mouse models.

Source: Choi, J. P. et al. Induction and Micro-CT Imaging of Cerebral Cavernous Malformations in Mouse Model. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the use of micro-CT imaging to visualize cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) lesions in a mouse brain. It details the steps for sample preparation, imaging, and 3D image reconstruction to evaluate the density and location of CCM lesions in brain tissue.
