Viral Surveillance

Viral surveillance is the systematic collection, testing, and analysis of information about viruses circulating in populations, helping detect outbreaks and guide public health decisions. In medicine, surveillance combines clinical reports, diagnostic testing, serology, and genomic sequencing to identify infections, track transmission, monitor viral evolution, and detect emerging variants. These data can reveal changes in incidence, geographic spread, and disease severity while supporting infection-control measures, vaccine updates, treatment planning, and outbreak response. Continuous surveillance also strengthens preparedness by identifying threats early and evaluating whether interventions are reducing transmission across communities and healthcare settings.

Disease surveillance is the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health practice. This process integrates data dissemination to entities responsible for preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. Surveillance systems provide crucial information for action, helping public health authorities make informed decisions to manage and prevent outbreaks, ensure public safety, optimize...

A method to preserve, detect and sequence RNA from Avian Influenza Viruses was validated and extended using natural faecal samples from birds. This technique removes the necessity of maintaining a cool chain and handling of infectious viruses and can be applied in a 96-well high-throughput setup.

Immune Surveillance by NK Cells and Phagocytes

2026

Immune surveillance is an integral part of the innate immune system, involving the continuous monitoring of peripheral tissues to detect and respond to pathogens, infected cells, or cancerous cells. This surveillance is conducted primarily by natural killer (NK) cells and phagocytes, which employ distinct but complementary mechanisms to identify and eliminate threats. Natural Killer Cells: The Fast Responders NK cells are large granular lymphocytes found in the blood and lymphatic system. These...
