Microinjection Program

The Microinjection Program covers microinjection, a technique for delivering very small volumes of material directly into cells, tissues, or specific anatomical sites with a fine needle. Under controlled microscopic or stereotaxic guidance, researchers position the needle precisely and apply measured pressure to introduce substances while limiting mechanical damage and unintended diffusion. In neuroscience, microinjection supports localized delivery of drugs, tracers, nucleic acids, or other experimental reagents for studying neural circuits, cellular function, and behavior. These procedures help link specific molecular or brain-region manipulations to physiological and behavioral outcomes, strengthening experimental control in research.

Zebrafish Microinjection Techniques

2023

One of the major advantages to working with zebrafish (Danio rerio) is that their genetics can be easily manipulated by microinjection of early stage embryos. Using this technique, solutions containing genetic material or knockdown constructs are delivered into the blastomeres: the embryonic cells sitting atop the yolk of the newly fertilized egg. Delivery into the cytoplasm is achieved either through direct injection into the blastomere, or via natural cytoplasmic movements that occur after a...

Direct intranuclear injection of cDNA is an effective transfection technique for post-mitotic cells. This method provides high levels of heterologous protein expression from single or multiple cDNA constructs and enables protein function to be studied in a physiologically relevant environment with a variety of single cell assays.
