Mouse Brain Stimulation

Mouse brain stimulation is the controlled activation or modulation of neural circuits in mice to investigate how brain activity shapes behavior, physiology, and disease. Researchers deliver stimulation through methods such as implanted electrodes, light-sensitive proteins activated by light, or engineered receptors targeted by drugs, allowing specific regions or cell populations to be manipulated under defined conditions. These approaches can reveal causal relationships between neural circuits and functions including movement, learning, reward, and sensory processing. Mouse brain stimulation also supports studies of neurological and psychiatric disorders, helping evaluate circuit-based mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies.

Impact of Direct Current Stimulation on Evoked Epileptic Seizures in Mouse Brain Slices

2025

The video demonstrates a study for assessing the impact of direct current stimulation (DCS) on epileptic seizures in mouse brain slices. The brain slices containing the connected medial thalamus (MT) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) regions are placed in a multielectrode array (MEA). Electrical stimuli to the MT and seizure-inducing drugs are applied to induce epileptic seizures in the ACC. DCS is then applied to assess its impact on evoked seizures.

Two-Color Stimulated Raman Scattering Imaging of Mouse Brain Tissue

Source: Espinoza, R., et al. Real-Time, Two-Color Stimulated Raman Scattering Imaging of Mouse Brain for Tissue Diagnosis. J. Vis. Exp. (2022). The video demonstrates two-color stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) imaging of mouse brain tissue sections. Two synchronized laser beams are directed onto the tissue section to excite molecular vibrations, resulting in a relative intensity change in the beams. Lipids and proteins in the tissue are detected using distinct frequency pairs of the laser...

A Multimodal Imaging- and Stimulation-based Method of Evaluating Connectivity-related Brain Excitability in Patients with Epilepsy

Resting-state functional-connectivity MRI has identified abnormalities in patients with a wide range of neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy due to malformations of cortical development. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in combination with EEG can demonstrate that patients with epilepsy have cortical hyperexcitability in regions with abnormal connectivity.
