MRgFUS, or magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound, is a noninvasive technique that combines MRI with precisely delivered ultrasound to target tissue, making it valuable for neuroscience research and clinical intervention. MRI identifies the target and monitors treatment in real time, while an array of ultrasound transducers converges acoustic energy at a focal point; depending on the intensity and exposure, this energy can heat and ablate tissue or influence neural activity. In neuroscience, MRgFUS enables incision-free access to deep brain regions and supports applications such as tremor treatment, targeted neuromodulation, and investigations of brain circuits, while improving anatomical precision and procedural monitoring.

Source: Mess, G., et al. Sonodynamic Therapy for the Treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme in a Mouse Model Using a Portable Benchtop Focused Ultrasound System. J. Vis. Exp. (2023)This video demonstrates a protocol for performing sonodynamic therapy on a brain tumor in a mouse model using magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS). A sonosensitizer precursor is administered prior to treatment, which accumulates in tumor cells and is activated by focused ultrasound to produce reactive...
