Neural Response

Neural response is the nervous system’s reaction to an internal or external stimulus, enabling organisms to sense changes, process information, and produce coordinated actions. Sensory receptors convert stimuli into electrical signals, which travel as action potentials along neurons and are transmitted across synapses by neurotransmitters; interconnected circuits then integrate these signals to generate outputs such as movement, secretion, or changes in behavior. Studying neural responses helps researchers understand perception, learning, reflexes, and neurological disorders, while techniques that measure electrical activity, neurotransmitter release, or behavioral responses support research in brain function, diagnosis, and the development of targeted therapies.

2013

Iontophoresis of neural agonists and antagonists during extracellular in vivo recordings is a powerful way to manipulate a neuron’s microenvironment. These manipulations can most easily be done via piggy-back multibarrel electrodes. Here we describe how to manufacture them and use them during auditory recordings.

Electrophysiological characterization of neuronal responses is important for understanding brain function and for guiding the placement of dyes for pathway tracing. However, many studies are performed in anesthetized animals. To understand brain function without anesthetics, we developed a method to record neuronal response properties and inject dyes in awake mouse.

In Vivo Calcium Imaging of Taste-Induced Neural Responses in Adult Drosophila

A calcium imaging approach enables the recording of taste-induced responses in the brains of awake flies while a solution is applied to the labellum. Primary gustatory responses in Drosophila melanogaster are used as an example, but this protocol can be adapted to study downstream neurons or other species.
