Neuronal Activity Suppression

Neuronal activity suppression is the reduction or inhibition of electrical signaling in neurons, a process that helps regulate information flow and maintain balanced brain circuit function. It occurs when inhibitory inputs, often mediated by neurotransmitters such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) or glycine, increase chloride influx or potassium efflux, hyperpolarizing the membrane and reducing the likelihood of action-potential generation. In neuroscience, studying this process clarifies how neural networks control timing, sensory processing, movement, and behavior. It also supports research into disorders involving excessive excitability, including epilepsy, and informs strategies for modulating pathological circuit activity.

(2015)This video demonstrates a microinjection-based technique for simultaneous neuronal recording and inhibition in the rat superior colliculus. The procedure involves stereotaxic targeting, skull drilling, and the insertion of an injectrode, which delivers an inhibitory neurotransmitter while recording neuronal activity. Light stimulation evokes...

Recording Electrophysiological Activity of the Neuronal Network in a Neuron-Astrocyte Co-culture

2025

This video demonstrates establishing a neuron-astrocyte co-culture for recording neuronal network activity. Upon establishing the co-culture of motor neurons and astrocytes on a multi-electrode array (MEA) plate, the synchronous rhythmic electrical activity of the neuronal network was recorded extracellularly using the MEA.

2012

Amblyopia is a developmental disorder of the visual cortex that is often accompanied by strong suppression of one eye. We present a new technique for measuring and treating interocular suppression in patients with amblyopia that can be deployed using virtual reality goggles or a portable iPod Touch device.

Place an anesthetized neonatal pup on a heating pad.Disinfect the scalp with ethanol.Fill a syringe with a viral solution containing adeno-associated viruses carrying the gene for a drug-activated inhibitory receptor and a tracking dye.Align the syringe tip with the pup’s head and slowly inject the virus into the brain for even distribution.Allow the pup to recover.During incubation, viral particles enter neurons and release their genetic material into the nucleus. It leads to inhibitory...
